Due to the efforts of our member Daniel Currin, who is active in the lower creek, we now have a new logo to represent STEPS. A logo is not something we have previously had as an organisation, so we are most pleased! Thanks Daniel for making this happen.
So, here it is, the thriving harakeke plant (or flax as you may know it) communicates the core environmental protection purpose of the society, and is of course something we see a lot in wetland environments. The blue represents the water of the creek.
Expect this to appear on our communications channels soon!
Ecological restoration work involves a lot of weeding. Hand weeding is how gems such as the Withiell Thomas rock forest fragment and the rock forest on Roy Clements Treeway have been helped back to being beautiful natural areas which are now seeding and growing in a ‘natural state’.
STEPS has had two regular weekly weeding sessions running for the past 2-3 years. One is at Roy Clements Treeway, Mt Albert on Wednesday afternoon. The other is in the rock forest lining the creek towards Point Chev where these cygnets were spotted last week.

We can always do with more helpers. Little experience is needed as training is provided and the work is not arduous. Each session lasts 1-2 hours. Please contact us via this site if you are interested in coming along once or more regularly.
STEPS was contacted regarding activities on Owairaka relating to tree removal. We have found that The Tree Council has outlined the planned work on the maunga and stated their support for it here. Like many other people we are always sad to see the loss of large trees, but we hope to join in some of the new planting activities in future.
